Every July, we hear a lot about freedom — freedom to choose, grow, build, and move toward a life or career that feels more aligned.

But I think that conversation belongs in the workplace too.

Most organizations think they have a retention problem.

That’s very human.

It’s also unrealistic.

Careers used to be predictable.

You learned a skill. You climbed a ladder. You stayed in one industry. You retired.

That model doesn’t exist anymore.

Today, professionals aren’t just navigating growth -  they’re navigating restructuring, industry pivots, AI disruption, leadership changes, geographic mobility, and evolving expectations.

Years ago, I was offered a leadership opportunity during a time when my confidence was lower than it is today and the stakes felt sky-high. On the outside, I looked capable and calm. Inside, I was spiraling.

But then- I moved. And that moment changed everything.

Careers used to be linear. Predictable. Mapped out.

You picked a lane. You stayed in it. You advanced by time, tenure, and the approval of whoever sat above you.

But that world is gone- and it’s not coming back.

Everyone’s talking about growth, but few are actually talking about alignment.

Because the truth is, most teams don’t burn out because they’re doing too little. They burn out because they’re doing everything- and none of it connects.

We’ve built a workplace culture that worships accessibility. Somewhere along the way, “dedicated” turned into “available 24/7,” and the lines between engagement and exhaustion completely disappeared.

Burnout has become the quiet epidemic in corporate life. But it’s no longer confined to overworked employees- it’s showing up at the very top.

For most of my career, I was told the same thing you probably were: find one good job, stick with it, and you’ll be secure. But the reality? The modern economy has completely shifted. Relying on a single paycheck- no matter how good it looks on paper- has become one of the riskiest financial strategies.

There’s something about September and October that feels like a reset—kids back to school, work calendars fill, summer fades. Yet many pause, waiting for January’s “fresh start.” But waiting means losing three months of momentum.
